Unfiltered compressed air will contain dust, oil, rust, moisture and other harmful substances, and therefore requires filtration. This comes from the air that is taken into the air compressor. Normal air drawn into a compressor contains all kinds of contamination and when the air is compressed you are concentrating these impurities.
Air leaving a standard screw or piston compressor will generally have a high water content, as well as a high concentration of oil (added as part of the compression) and other contaminants. There are many different levels of filters, suitable for different pneumatics applications. Depending on what you are doing with the air will determine what level of filtration you need. There is virtually no application that would not benefit from air filtration. There is however many applications that require clean and filtered air to either meet a standard (food industry), increase quality (spraying paint) or make the air safe (as in breathing air).

DD Filters: Particulate filters - 1st level filtration. Particulate compressed air filters are used to remove dust and particles from the air.
PD Filters: Coalescing filters - 2nd level filtration. High oil compressed air coalescing filters remove water and oil aerosols by coalescing the aerosols into droplets. This happens partially because of tortuous path and pressure drop. Coalescers remove both water and oil aerosols from the air stream, and are rated at particulate contamination through direct interception. Filtration of oil, water aerosols, dust and dirt particles to 0.01 µm the best achievable in industry.
NB: A Dryer is needed to remove water from the air.

Atlas Copco QD(+) activated carbon filter efficiently reduces oil vapour and odours in your compressed air stream to protect your investment, equipment and processes.
The activated carbon layers will, by the use of adsorption, reduce the residual oil content to less than 0.003 mg/m³. The pressure drop remains minimal throughout the lifetime of the filter.
